Reviewing and reporting suspected piracy on Discord

Educational information for rights holders. Verify current platform and legal requirements before acting.

A careful evidence and reporting workflow for suspected unauthorized material on Discord, with no promised response time or outcome.

Published ; updated

A server name, invitation, or discussion about a work does not prove that copyrighted material is present. Review the specific message or attachment and preserve only the evidence needed for an informed decision.

Document the exact location

  • Record the server, channel, message link or identifier, account, and capture date
  • Identify the material at issue and the corresponding original work
  • Preserve visible context that helps a reviewer distinguish a copy from commentary or a link
  • Do not bypass access controls or encourage redistribution to obtain evidence

Confirm authority and context

Check that you own the relevant rights or have authorization to act. Consider licenses and legal exceptions. A platform-rule report may be more appropriate than a copyright notice for issues such as impersonation, harassment, or privacy.

Use Discord's current official guidance

Open Discord's official Safety or Help Center and locate its current copyright and trademark complaint instructions. Required identifiers and forms can change, so verify them immediately before submitting.

Track the provider decision

Keep acknowledgements, requests for more information, decisions, and any appeal or counter-notice separate. Do not assume a response time, removal, account action, or server action.

Separate an attachment from a link

A Discord message may upload a file directly, embed a preview, or point to a separate host. Record what the message itself contains and keep every external destination as a distinct candidate. If the same work appears in several messages, preserve the message-level locations rather than relying on a server name or invitation alone.

Respect access boundaries

Use only evidence you are authorised to access. Do not join a closed server under false pretences, borrow someone else's account, or ask members to repost material for you. When a customer reports a private message you cannot review lawfully, record the report and the limitation. Second-hand information should not be relabelled as a verified finding.

Make the location reproducible

  • Server and channel visible to the authorised reviewer
  • Specific message link or identifier, account, and capture date
  • Attachment name or external destination and what was visibly accessible
  • Protected-work reference and the exact portion being compared
  • Known licences, collaborator permissions, or legal exceptions considered

Keep the screenshot narrow enough to identify the item while preserving the text context a reviewer needs. Avoid exposing unrelated members, conversations, or sensitive content. If Discord's current instructions ask for technical identifiers, obtain them through the authorised interface and do not invent or infer values from a screenshot.

Match the report to the issue

Copyright, trademark, impersonation, privacy, harassment, and safety concerns may follow different provider processes. Describe the material and requested review accurately, use Discord's current official policy or help route, and read the declarations before submitting. A provider can request more information, decline the complaint, limit specific content, or apply broader action under its own rules.

Follow up without rewriting history

Record the acknowledgement, provider decision, appeal or counter-notice, and later availability checks separately. A message that is no longer visible may have been deleted by a user, hidden by permissions, or changed for another reason. Report the observed state without automatically crediting a particular request or promising permanent removal.
